Unlike brands like Samsung and Apple, which release their flagship smartphones once a year, Japanese giant Sony releases its flagship twice a year. The trend started with the launch of Xperia Z in February, and following it up with its successor dubbed as Xperia Z1 in September. This indicates that the next iteration of top of the line Xperia smartphone is coming soon- as soon as first quarter of 2014. So, what does this device will bring to the table? That’s what we intend to find out by listing out all the ongoing rumors of the possible specifications of the Sony Xperia Z2.
Sony will continue with the use of its distinctive omnibalance design for the Xperia Z2. It will also feature narrow bezels and sleek design. The smartphone will also be IP 55/57 compliant making it dust and water-resistant.
While both Xperia Z and Xperia Z1 were sporting a 5-inch display, their successor Xperia Z2 will feature a 5.2-inch display based on IGZO and TRILUMINOS technology. The IGZO technology will improve the display quality and also enhance the battery life. It will bear even better resolution than the full HD screen with 2,560 x 1,440 pixels resolution. This will result in high pixel density of 506 ppi.
This is where speculations seems to be of very different nature. On one hand, some suggest that the device will be powered by the Snapdragon 800 processor only, which was also underneath the Xperia Z1. While other suggests that the Xperia Z2 will get a 64-bit processor which could be Qualcomm’s yet to be unveiled processor. Interestingly, Qualcomm has already released a 64- bit Snapdragon 410 processor, but that’s targeted at mid-range devices, so Sony might be waiting for the chip manufacturer to launch its top-end processor based on 64-bit architecture.
In the smartphone market, the Galaxy Note 3 boasts of the most amount of RAM with a 3GB memory. However if rumors are to be believed, Sony Xperia Z2 will challenge that with 3GB RAM module as well.
No guess for this part of specification as the Xperia Z2 like its predecessors will get 16/ 32 GB internal storage. This can also be further expanded up to 64GB with the use of a microSD card.
The Xperia Z1 got good response to its 20.7MP Sony G lens camera at the back. It’s successor, the Xperia Z2 will continue with the same camera based on Exmor RS optics. But it will be using Xenon flash for low-light condition which is more powerful than LED flash.
At the front, the smartphone will get a 3.5MP camera which can prove useful for video conferencing or self-portraits.
The Sony Xperia Z2 will come with all the standard connectivity features including 2G/ 3G/ 4G network support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS/ GLONASS.
There aren’t much rumors about the battery capacity of the smartphone, but since battery is a big issue for the working of a device these days, it should be sufficient enough. The battery capacity could be between 3,200 and 3,500 mAh.
With the launch of Android’s latest version 4.4 KitKat just last month, it’s safe to say that the Sony Xperia Z2 will be loaded with Android 4.4 OS. Sony will add some of its customizations on top of the user interface.
While the company may showcase it next month in CES, it will go on sale in the month of March or April.
