How to Install Android L on Mac or Windows

Google recently unveiled the latest version of Android termed as the ‘Android L’. It was not launched with the Nexus hardware and it was aimed at giving a glimpse of the next Android. Google recently has made Android L Preview SDK available for everyone. This allows you to test, use and understand the features of the Android L. Many developers use this to develop Apps, and predict what the full version might look like. They also send recommendations to google for possible improvements in the OS.

Setting Up and Installing Android L SDK Emulator

Step 1 –

To enjoy Android L on your PC, you need to first download the installer for Android SDK. You can download if from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html. For simplicity we have used the Windows version; however the process remains exactly the same for mac as well.

Step 2 –

Install the Android SDK and save it to a preferred location on your system.

Step 3 –

Now go to the location where you installed or saved the Android SDK and launch the “SDK Manager”. In some cases users download the ZIP Version of the Android SDK, so if that is the case, find the “SDK Manger” application in the folder where you extracted your files.

Step 4 –

The application will take some time to load as it has too fetched the various packages for Android SDK. Wait for some time and do not close the application.

Step 5 –

After all the packages have been loaded, you now need to select the ones you need to install in your system. You only need to select “Android L Preview (API 20)” and “Android SDK Platform tools” (which is listed under tools). You don’t need ‘Extras’, as the aforementioned packages are enough.

Step 6 –

Next hit the “Install Packages” button following a window pop up which will ask you to confirm about the packages which you need to install. You also need to accept the Licence Agreements and click on Install. Now the packages you selected will be downloaded and installed.

Step 1 –

Once again you need to go to folder where you have installed Android SDK, but this time select “AVD Manager”. Now click New and the create a virtual device, fill the columns using the details shared below-

  • AVD Name- You can select the name of your choice.
  • Device – You can choose any device but we recommend Nexus 5, because it works best with Nexus 5.
  • Target – Select – “Android L (Preview) – API Level L”.
  • CPU – Select “Intel Atom (x86)”.
  • Skin – Select “No Skin” and also None for Back and Front Camera.
  • RAM – You can set the RAM at 512 if you are using this emulator for the first time.
  • Internal Storage – This can be set according to your preference.
  • Emulation Options – Select the option ‘Use Host GPU’.

Step 2 –

Click ‘OK’ on the window that confirms your selections.

Step 3 –

You should now select the virtual device you have just created and hit the ‘Start’ button.

Step 4 –

A window of ‘Launch Options’ would be next. You need to make no changes in this. Hit the ‘Launch’ button.

Step 5 –

You will see a few command windows popping up, ignore them and after some time you will see a window which shows that your Android device is booting up. This process might take around 5-10 minutes on your first run.

Step 6 –

Finally you would see a screen which confirms your install and now you can finally enjoy Android L on your Windows or Mac device.
